Michael Martinez, considered the Golden Boy of Philippine ice skating, will compete in the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games next year at Innsbruck, Austria.
The Winter Youth Olympics will be held from January 13 to 22, 2012.
At a press conference at the SM Mall of Asia, Martinez expressed his excitement over being chosen to compete in the Youth Olympics. He also gave onlookers a sample of his routine at the mall's ice skating rink.
The 14-year-old Martinez has previously represented the Philippines in international competitions, most recently in the ISU JGP Brisbane 2011 Junior Mens' programs last September.
He made headlines in 2009 during his stint at the Trnava Ice Cup in Slovakia, where he won the gold in the novice boys' division.
Martinez has been training in and out of the country to prepare for the event. He will continue to train in Los Angeles, California during the remaining months prior to the competition.
