Philippine Taekwondo delivers two more golds in 26th SEA Games

John Paul ‘Japoy’ Lizardo

The Philippine taekwondo bets have two more gold medals to show for their campaign after John Paul ‘Japoy’ Lizardo and Kristie Alora won in their respective finals matches at the POPKI Sport Hall in Cibubur District.

Lizardo delivered a head kick with 11 seconds to go in his match that enabled him to claim the win over Thailand’s Jerranat Nakaviroj, 3-2, in the flyweight finals.

En route to the finals, he defeated Malaysia’s Ryan Chong Wy Lunn in the preliminaries, 10-2, and completed a comeback win, 7-6, in the semifinal against Jason Junwei Tan of Singapore.

Alora, a Guangzhou Asian Games bronze medalist, provided similar dramatics in her match, needing an extra round to decide the outcome as she pulled off a win over Eka Sahara of host Indonesia in the 73kg final.

2009 Laos SEA Games champion Alexander Briones, like Alora, drew a bye in the preliminary stages of their events. But Briones fell to Indonesia’s Rizal Samsir, 5-2, in their 87kg-and-over match to settle for a silver medal.

The taekwondo squad ended its SEA Games campaign with four gold, three silver and five bronze medals after four days of competition.
