Brian Viloria won against Giovanni Segura via TKO in Round 8 on Sunday, December 11, 2011, held at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
As shown at GMA Channel 7 that day, 31-year old Filipino-Hawaiian boxer Brian Viloria successfully defended his WBO flyweight title by winning against Mexican challenger Giovanni Segura.
The Viloria vs Segura bout, which was dubbed as “Island Assault 3″, ended in TKO after referee Samuel Viruet stopped the fight in Round 8 after Viloria hit Segura with a right and a follow up.
Viloria, from Narvacan, Ilocos Sur and also known as “The Hawaiian Punch“, had his fourth straight win after losing the IBF Flyweight belt to Carlos Tamara on January 2010 in Pasay via TKO in Round 12.
The 12-round fight sought the two boxers exchanging strong punches, with Segura landing some good uppercuts while Viloria, whom observers say a stronger and quicker boxer, used mostly his right hand.
Although the defending champion had a cut over his left eye early in the fight, observers noted that Viloria lead the scores when he knocked down Segura just 29 seconds into the eight round.
Brian Viloria won over Julio Cesar Miranda of Mexico last July via unanimous decision, where he grabbed the WBO flyweight belt, which was held at his hometown in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Viloria has now a record of 30-3 with 17 knockouts, while Segura, who ranked No. 9 on Ring Magazine‘s pound-for-pound list, has now a record of 28-2-1, with 24 knockouts.
